The Differences Between Toyota Hilux / Pickup RN30 and RN45 2WD Bumper Stays

The Toyota Hilux—known as the Toyota Pickup in the United States—is a reliable and durable vehicle, and demand for aftermarket replacement parts still exists today.
However, because these vehicles are now several decades old, reliable information about many parts is limited. In many cases, the only way to correctly identify a part is to remove it from the vehicle and compare its dimensions, mounting points, and overall shape.
In this article, we will take a closer look at the differences between the Toyota Hilux RN30 2WD and RN45 2WD bumper stays.

Toyota Hilux bumper stays can look extremely similar at first glance. We previously published a comparison of bumper stays for the 1984–1988 Toyota Hilux / Pickup, check it out here:https://www.buyntryparts.com/posts/reviews-for-toyota-hilux-pickup-bumper-stay/

SYA2161 — Toyota Hilux RN30 2WD, 1979–1981
The first bumper stay is SYA2161, designed for the 1979–1981 Toyota Hilux RN30 2WD.
OEM Part Numbers:
- RH: 52011-89102
- LH: 52012-89102
SYA2155 — Toyota Hilux RN45 2WD, 1982–1983
The second bumper stay is SYA2155, designed for the 1982–1983 Toyota Hilux RN45 2WD.
OEM Part Numbers:
- RH: 52011-89104
- LH: 52012-89104
At First Glance, They Look Almost Identical
As shown in the comparison images, the SYA2161 for the RN30 2WD looks remarkably similar to the SYA2155 for the RN45 2WD.
If we begin measuring from the upper mounting hole—the location where the bumper stay attaches to the radiator support—the mounting dimensions are the same.
This is because both versions use the same radiator support structure.
However, the main difference can be found at the mounting section where the bumper stay attaches to the bumper.
The Main Difference: Bumper Mounting Holes
The critical difference between these two bumper stays is the position and design of the mounting holes used to secure the bumper.
BuyNTryParts also supplies the bumper for the RN30 2WD, making it easier to demonstrate exactly where the differences are located.

These mounting points are the key areas that buyers should carefully check before purchasing.
When installed, the bumper is secured to the bumper stays through these mounting locations. In other words, the bumper itself is primarily held in place by six mounting bolts.
Because the mounting hole positions are different, these two bumper stays cannot be directly interchanged, even though their overall appearance is very similar.
Size Comparison
There is also a noticeable difference in overall dimensions.

SYA2161 — RN30 2WD
- Length: Approximately 37 cm
- Width: Approximately 24 cm
- Size: Smaller
- Rear Mounting Holes: Located on the same plane

SYA2155 — RN45 2WD
- Length: Approximately 40 cm
- Width: Approximately 29 cm
- Size: Larger
- Rear Mounting Holes: Positioned at a 90-degree angle to each other
The SYA2155 is both longer and wider than the SYA2161. Therefore, despite their similar appearance, they are not directly interchangeable.
Installation Difference
For the SYA2155, BuyNTryParts also supplies the corresponding bumper ends, allowing us to show the actual installation arrangement more clearly.

As shown in the installation photos, the bumper stay is attached through the lower mounting hole.
The other mounting hole, positioned at a right angle, is used to secure the center bumper section.
This difference in mounting design is one of the most important identification points when comparing these two bumper stays.
Specification Comparison:
| SKU | SYA2161 | SYA2155 |
| Vehicle / Chassis Code | RN30 2WD | RN45 2WD |
| Length | Approx. 37 cm | Approx. 40 cm |
| Width | Approx. 24 cm | Approx. 29 cm |
| Size | Smaller | Larger |
| Rear Mounting Hole Design | Two rear holes are located on the same plane | Two rear holes are positioned at 90 degrees to each other |
Conclusion: Similar Appearance, Important Differences
These two sets of Toyota Hilux / Pickup bumper stays look extremely similar, which makes them easy to confuse.
Unless you are an experienced repair shop, restoration specialist, or automotive parts supplier, it can be difficult to identify the correct version simply by looking at the overall shape. This is also why buyers can easily purchase the wrong bumper stay.
There are also differences between the 2WD and 4WD bumper stays, which we may cover in a future comparison.
